I would 2nd d3v in saying that there's definitely still a scene that you can find for the game; people to find on a whim for games etc, but just by the way you worded your post, if you're looking for "your first" Marvel game to try -in general-, MVC2 has definitely had a nice resurgence as of late as well.
The fightcade room is constantly packed since the rollback netcode update dropped for that version of Flycast. It and the other Naomi titles don't support Ranked play atm, but it's still easy to find games nonetheless. Ratio play has also been getting pretty popular iirc, so you're finding really varied and interesting team compositions all the time compared to where the game was back in the early 2000's. Dubious remake/remaster/port speculation and freemvc2 movements aside, if you have access to a PC with even the most barebones specs and an ethernet cable, there hasn't been a better time to get into MVC2 since...well, 2009 with an xbox live gold subscription lol.
