I just had a thought about this topic because in the communities that play modern fighting games where the public perception of the quality of the netcode is poor (i.e. SFV, Tekken 7, Smash) some days I read statements in a Twitch chat or on Twitter such as "CFN is especially bad today" or how Tekken competitors are showing increasing frustration with the quality of the netcode playing online tournaments, which is jarring when remembering the start of Season 4 when Bamco updated the netcode and it was receiving some serious praise.
How much of this discourse do you think is brought on by people simply believing things have somehow been changed for the worse over time--for everyone and not just one person's spotty connection--or could it be that we now know more about the netcode of the games we play the longer we play them and now we no longer overestimate how good the online experience can be in that game? What other reasons might cause the perception of the online experience in our favourite fighting games, known for having good netcode or not, to worsen? Does anyone else have any stories or recollections of a game they play consistently feeling like it's been getting worse?
